Flash (previously Macromedia now Adobe) is essentially a javascript generator. The flavor of javascript it uses is called actionscript. Javascript was designed for the browser, to allow behaviors of various kinds to be programmed into web graphics, making them animate. Flash is a software which helps the designer build javascript animations, previously known as "shockwave" files or movies (swf).
