Second InDesign Layout Project: One Page Magazine Ad
Our second layout project using InDesign will be to redesign an existing one page magazine ad, from any magazine of your choice. This is a "makeover" project. The more of a contrast between the "before" and "after" the better. So, start with the dumbest, ugliest ad you can find, and recreate it! (Only make it way better.)
Old magazines are a good resource, since the product photos themselves probably need to be updated. You can use the existing "copy" (the written text in the ad) or you can re-write it if it seems dated. Sometimes the "taglines" or company slogans change. Ads that were intended to be viewed as futuristic 10 years ago now seem comical. What does the "future" look like now? Likewise, what did the past look like? What exactly is "retro" or "nostagic" or "kitsch" and what does it appeal to in our selves? In a world where we are constantly being marketed to, what is new and what is old? And how can you tell the difference? What's more, does it make any difference?
This project is intended to get you thinking more about the meaning, message, or concept of the ad - what it is trying to say. What is it selling? Who does the ad address itself to? What part of the market is it targeting? These are broad questions that every ad designer must think about. The more clearly the ad answers these questions, the more effective it is.
